Senior Legal Advisor
Measured Ability is currently recruiting an experienced Senior Legal Advisor to provide expert legal guidance and strategic support across our client’s organisation. This role is designed for a highly skilled attorney who can take the lead on complex litigation and arbitration matters while providing robust commercial and contractual advice. The successful candidate will oversee legal risk and drive the implementation of effective governance and compliance frameworks. You will be expected to work independently on high-stakes commercial disputes, engage effectively with Senior Counsel and external legal teams, and deliver well-reasoned legal opinions to support executive decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Litigation & Dispute Resolution
- Lead and manage all litigation and arbitration matters for the organisation.
- Draft and finalise critical legal documentation, including memoranda, statements of claim, affidavits, and arbitration submissions.
- Formulate proactive dispute resolution strategies and provide ongoing guidance to internal stakeholders.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external legal counsel, regulatory authorities, and Senior Counsel.
- Monitor all dispute-related risks, timelines, and procedural strategies.
Contracting & Commercial Advisory
- Draft, review, and negotiate a diverse portfolio of commercial contracts and legal agreements.
- Conduct in-depth contract analysis and provide clear legal opinions regarding risks and obligations.
- Advise internal teams on risk allocation, compliance, and necessary mitigation measures.
- Prepare formal legal and business correspondence for counterparties.
- Assist with cross-border transactions and advise on applicable jurisdictional requirements.
Legal Operations, Governance & Compliance
- Coordinate legal workflows between the Legal, Commercial, Operations, and Finance departments.
- Develop and implement internal policies, procedures, and governance documentation.
- Monitor and ensure adherence to internal, contractual, and regulatory compliance obligations.
- Identify potential legal risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Facilitate internal training on legal processes, contractual obligations, and risk management.
Strategic Legal Advisory
- Prepare comprehensive legal opinions, briefing notes, and executive summaries for senior leadership.
- Provide strategic, commercially focused advice on risk mitigation for business initiatives and projects.
- Clearly articulate key legal risks and recommended courses of action to management.
Minimum Requirements
- LLB degree or an equivalent legal qualification recognised in South Africa.
- Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
- A minimum of 7 years of post-qualification experience.
- Extensive experience in litigation and arbitration, with a proven background in commercial and dispute law.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal matters independently.
- Exceptional contract drafting, reviewing, and negotiation skills.
- Strong analytical, research, and legal writing abilities, complemented by excellent communication skills.
- Proven ability to work under pressure and manage multiple high-priority matters simultaneously.
Advantageous Experience
- Previous experience within the mining industry or a related environment.
- Experience in managing disputes arising from mining activities or large-scale commercial contracts.
- A background in developing dispute resolution strategies and managing arbitration proceedings.
- Experience working with Senior Counsel and external legal teams.
- Previous in-house experience within a corporate or commercial organisation.
- Candidates transitioning from private legal practice into an in-house environment will be viewed favourably.
